The Regional Secretariat for Science, Technology and Infrastructures attended the event “Mazovia Space Days,” as Region that uses space technology and a member of the NEREUS Association.
The Azorean presence at the event, which was held at the end of last week, enabled the discovery of the potentialities of the Region for future partnerships with general interest the citizens in a vast area of applications, such as the monitoring of the exclusive economic zone, maritime safety, telecommunications, the optimisation of the management of volcanic eruptions, sea level monitoring, as well as land-traffic control.
The Azores, as a co-leader of the Work Group of the GMES/Earth Observation, also presented the potentialities of this Work Group under the NEREUS Association, since the development of space applications, particularly the Earth observation, will widen the Region’s interests, regarding the importance of the GMES (Global Monitoring Environmental for Security) project in the European Community.
The presence of the space infrastructure of Santa Maria has contributed for that, both as a tracking station, being in charge of the station’s maintenance and operations concerning its mission of the ESA’s ATV module, and as an Earth Observation Station, for which Edisoft acquired, installed, tested and certificated the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) for the ENISAT and RADARSAT -1 satellites. The countless potentialities of this infrastructure on Santa Maria will indubitably place the Region in the roadmap of the space infrastructures both in the Azores and in the World.
