Avelino Meneses says it is time for education to prepare post-pandemic period

The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture said at the Legislative Assembly that "it is time to prepare the period" post COVID-19 pandemic.

"In education, this involves the development of distance learning as an alternative to the traditional face-to-face method," said Avelino Meneses, who spoke Thursday, by video conference, during the discussion of the draft resolutions presented by different parliamentary groups on ensuring the right to education.

According to the Regional Secretary, it is necessary to invest in technology and training, a process that has already begun and that "needs to be reinforced."

With the adoption of distance learning at the beginning of the third term, the Regional Government allocated 2,500 computers for home loan to students and some teachers, as well as more than 1,450 Internet connection devices, revealed Avelino Meneses.

The Secretary for Education also stressed that the Government has taken steps in the provision of training and information to teachers, students, parents and guardians, through the creation of specific areas on the Education Portal.

Among the various training projects under way in distance learning, Avelino Meneses highlighted the 25-hour training course conducted by the Open University to about four hundred teachers in the Region, which will be followed by a 15-hour training course to be taught by a teacher from abroad.

Additionally, he mentioned that the Regional Directorate for Education has set up a team composed of about fifty technicians that will provide online support to students and teachers.

However, Avelino Meneses noted that "in the midst of a deep crisis, it is understandable that we cannot reach an optimum level, so we strive every day for good or, at least, acceptable solutions."
