Avelino Meneses calls for construction of inclusive school

The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture stated on the island of Terceira that a democratic society that does not admit exclusion, as is the case in the Azores, and it must "build a school where all have their place."

Avelino Meneses spoke at the delivery ceremony of the "Dare, Intervene, Improve 2019" prize to Francisco Ferreira Drummond Basic Education School in the town of São Sebastião. According to him, "it is urgent that families, communities and school be the beacons of a better society where no one is left behind because no one should be left behind."

In this context, the Secretary for Education stated that today "marks" the publication of an amendment to the ordinance regulating adapted sports, which covers about one thousand athletes and fifty promoters in the Azores.

The amendment to the ordinance follows the evolution of adapted sport over the years, namely its growth, and its promotion by sports associations as a result of an increase in physical activity, added the government official.

The Regional Secretary considered that the "Musicality in Language" project, winner of the 2019 edition of the "Dare, Intervene, Improve" prize, stands out for "innovation, multidisciplinary approach, promotion of formal and non-formal learning, and integration of community knowledge."

This project involves all elementary school students from São Sebastião and Porto Judeu, covering 207 students. It is primarily intended to improve student literacy.

With this project, the school intended to put arts at the service of the study of language through an approach based on the use of music and theatre for the learning of Portuguese Language.

The "Dare, Intervene, Improve" prize was implemented in order to acknowledge and value school establishments promoting projects, created or adapted by them, to respond to the learning issues they face.

The creation of this prize aims to recognise the effort carried out by schools in fighting school underachievement and early dropout, improving teaching and learning conditions, and disseminating the work towards the promotion of educational success to the school community as well as to the society in general.
