The Microbial Observatory of Furnas (OMIC), integrated the Science Centres Network administered by the Regional Secretariat for Science, Technology and Infrastructures, promotes the initiative “Science and Us” included in the Scientific Dissemination month.
In order to celebrate the National Day of Scientific Culture on November 24, the OMIC has organised a series of activities addressed at different age groups. “Clean, Recycle and Learn” is the title of an activity that will bring several people to the Furnas hot springs, starting at 9:30 AM. This activity aims to encourage people to maintain the preservation ecosystems and promote recycling through educational tasks.
The activity “Pyjama Party with Our Friends Microbes,” addressed at young children, will be held on Friday night from 9 PM to 8 AM (November 27). This is a unique opportunity for children to fall asleep listening to stories about the importance of these microorganisms in our everyday lives.
The older ones may participate in Microbial Safaris to be take place on the weekend between 9 AM and 1 PM. With the help of the OMIC team, they will be able to identify microorganism communities living the Furnas hot springs.
Moreover, the programme also includes a public session on the theme “Nature Conservation and Economy in the Azores” on Saturday at 4 PM.
The Science and Scientific Dissemination Week will close with a tour to the Terra Nostra Park promoted by the OMIC team on November 28 between 10 AM and 1:30 PM, which includes explanations on the ecosystems and thermal springs that make this park a unique green area.
