The Ponta Delgada Public Library and Regional Archive (BPARPD), the Volcanological and Geothermal Observatory of the Azores and the Publiçor publisher have organised the launching of the book Dos Vulcões dos Açores / From the Azores Volcanoes by Vítor Hugo Forjaz, Zilda T. M. França, Jorge M. Tavares, Luís Miguel Almeida and Jose António Rodrigues at the Auditorium of the Library on March 4 at 6 PM, which will be presented by Professor António Manuel B. Machado Pires.
Before the closing of the session, a RTP-Açores short film, titled as History of a Volcano (Capelinhos) directed by journalist José Serra.
This work of scientific nature, which also includes a bilingual DVD, narrates the history of the Azores from a volcanic point of view, being the first of a thematic collection organised by Publiçor. The history of the roots of the Azorean islands throughout the centuries is told through texts, modern maps and a selection of photographs made by José António Rodrigues.
The volcanologist and President of the Volcanological and Geothermal Observatory of the Azores, Vítor Hugo Forjaz, is in charge of the coordination of 160 page work. This expert defends that the book to be launched aims to disseminate the role of volcanology as a very important scientific area in the Azores, as it is part of the Azorean society, and therefore it cannot be separated from the history of this people.
A Bibliographical and Documental Exhibition alluding to the theme of the book, which also includes materials from the Capelinhos Volcano, will be open to the public.
