"Azores Between Seas" campaign kicks off today on digital platforms to promote ocean literacy

The "Azores Between the Seas," an ocean literacy campaign promoted by the Regional Directorate for Sea Affairs, has a new format this year. It is now present on digital platforms due to the constraints caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

From today, European Maritime Day, and until June 8, World Maritime Day, the live talks with researchers and experts on the major issues concerning the Azores Sea will be streamed live on social networks, namely on the Facebook page of the Regional Directorate for Sea Affairs and on the campaign's Instagram page.

With the support of Island Natural Parks and Azorina, this campaign has been taking place since 2010, between European Maritime Day and throughout the archipelago aimed with the aim of enhancing the knowledge of the Azores Sea as well as its sustainable use.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which prevents the organisation of activities involving the physical participation of citizens, this year's edition of "Azores Between Seas" proposes an online campaign featuring the participation of several researchers and experts.

The Regional Director for Sea Affairs stressed that the primary goal "is the same as always: promoting the knowledge about the Azores Sea and raise awareness among citizens for the importance of its preservation."

Overall, "there will be 17 online talks," Filipe Porteiro announced, adding that "contents and thematic materials will also be made available on the campaign's website."

The online talks of "Azores Between Seas" will start this afternoon at 5 pm, with the participation of the Regional Director for Sea Affairs. On Thursday, May 21, at the same time, there will be a lecture to be delivered by researcher Jorge Fontes from OKEANOS/IMAR on the theme "What the great pelagics seek in the Azores Sea."

On Friday, May 22, it will be the turn of researcher Marina Carreiro Silva, from OKEANOS/IMAR to answer the question "Are the Azores a hotspot for cold water corals?"

This year's edition of the "Azores Between Seas" campaign counts on the collaboration of OMA - Azores Sea Observatory, Blue Ocean Foundation, through the Blue Azores and Educating for a Blue Generation programmes, and with the partnership of the European LIFE NATURA project.

To follow the "Azores Between Seas 2020," those who are interested can follow the Facebook page of the Regional Directorate for Sea Affairs at https://www.facebook.com/direcaoregionalassuntosmar/ or on the Instagram page of the "Azores Between Seas" campaign.
