Proposed reorganisation of health services on Pico Island deserves to be analysed, says Vasco Cordeiro

The President of the Government stated today that the proposal presented by health professionals to the Government, for the reorganisation of health services on Pico Island, deserves to be analysed shortly in order to assess, above all, its benefits for the provision of health care to the island's population.

“This is a proposal that I believe to be worthy of a quick and in-depth analysis, so that, if it moves forward, it can be done quickly,” stressed Vasco Cordeiro during a visit to the works for the recovery of the damage caused by Hurricane Lorenzo in the municipalities of Madalena and Lajes do Pico.

Speaking to journalists, Vasco Cordeiro mentioned that, after the most intense phase of combating the COVID-19 pandemic, the return to normality of health services on the island of Pico was scheduled for July 1; however, this proposal for the organisation of these services has emerged in the meantime.

"In view of this, I asked the Regional Secretariat for Health to urgently analyse it, so that, if it is a good proposal, especially for health users, it can be implemented and, thus, better serve the population," stressed the President of the Government.

According to him, this proposal provides for the extension of the doctors' working hours at the permanent attendance services of São Roque and Lajes do Pico Health Centres, the reinforcement of medical specialties at Madalena Health centre and the extended operation of Immediate Life Support (ILS) assistance.

“This proposal was sent to us by health professionals working on the island of Pico, defending that this would be the best responses even for the organisation of services,” said Vasco Cordeiro.

In addition to visiting the site of the works for the recovery of the damage caused by Hurricane Lorenzo, the President's visit to Pico also includes meetings with the mayors of the three city councils, as part of the round of contacts and visits taking place on all islands of the archipelago, following the resumption of economic activity in the Region.
