Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre considered one of the 150 best projects co-funded by the European Union

The Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre, a structure administered by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and the Sea, was chosen as one of the 150 best projects that demonstrate the successful application of the funds allocated by the European Regional Development Fund and the Cohesion Funds. This appointment was presented in the publication “Investing in our Regions – 150 examples of projects co-funded by European regional policy.” It is classified in the environment category in addition to other 14 structures which are mainly located in Eastern Europe. With regard to Portuguese projects, the Capelinhos Volcano Centre is included in a group made up of five Portuguese classified structures, such as the Porto Subway.
This distinction arises at a time when it celebrates the 2nd anniversary of operation. The Centre opened to the public on August 18, 2010 and has received over 43,000 visitors.
In the end of 2010, the Interpretation Centre was integrated in the Faial Island Natural Park, thus being part of structure that includes all classified areas on the island, such as the Porto Pim Whale Factory, the Botanical Garden and six pedestrian trails located in the park area. The integration of the Interpretation Centre in the Faial Island Natural Park has become asset for visitors as there were important investments made in the visiting area a better dissemination of the various spaces that integrate this park.
In order to improve the services rendered, the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre expanded the Shop as well as the Bar this year, providing visitors with the opportunity of enjoying quick meals in this space.
Satisfaction surveys will be distributed amongst the visitors of the three Environmental Interpretation of the Park starting next week. These surveys aim to assess the visitors’ satisfaction levels.
