The Government of the Azores will improve the access road to the Caldeira da Ribeira Grande, one of the main touristic sites of S. Miguel Island.
According to the Regional Secretary for Science Technology and Infrastructures, the improvements in the road will include its expansion, the construction of a drainage system and the resurface of the pavement.
José Contente assured that the works will not have negative consequences on the surrounding vegetation, emphasising that the government intends, through the accomplishment of the works, “to improve the safety and modernisation of the road, protecting its surrounding landscape and environment.”
The Secretary considered that the aforementioned road “deserves to have another management, not only for tourist concerns, but also for security reasons.” He added that the works to improve the road to the Caldeiras da Ribeira Grande should start in the beginning of 2010, being completed before the end of the year.
José Contente added that, after the Government’s interventions in the road, it will be handed over to the Ribeira Grande City Hall.
