Ponta Delgada ,  December 10, 2018

Conference on 270 years of Azorean presence in Santa Catarina, Brazil, travels through six islands in the Azores

The Government of the Azores promotes the conference "270 Years of Azorean Presence in Santa Catarina" on the islands of Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Terceira, Graciosa and São Miguel from December 12 to 18.

The conference will be conducted by Sérgio Luiz Ferreira, professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, who is also the President of the House of the Azores of Santa Catarina. The event aims to enhance the knowledge on the migrations to Santa Catarina in the Azores, disseminating the legacy and important image of the Azores in the community of this Brazilian state.

The event will take place at the João José da Graça Public Library and Regional Archive in Horta Wednesday, December 12, at the Whaling Museum in Lajes do Pico on the following day and at the Francisco Lacerda Museum in Calheta, São Jorge, on December 14.

On December 15, this conference will be held at the Luís Silva Ribeiro Public Library and Regional Archive in Angra do Heroísmo, followed by the Graciosa Museum in Santa Cruz on the next day and at the Ponta Delgada Public Library and Regional Archive on December 18 as part of the celebration programme of the International Migrants Day.

Organised by the Regional Directorate for the Communities, this initiative is part of the celebrations of the 270th anniversary of the Azorean presence in Santa Catarina.

Throughout 2018, the Government of the Azores has promoted and supported the organisation of several activities in the context of these celebrations in partnership with several entities, including the House of the Azores of Santa Catarina.

On February 22, 1748, the first Azoreans who emigrated to this region of southern Brazil landed in Santa Catarina.

After 270 years, the marks of the Azorean presence are still visible in the tangible and intangible heritage as well as in the dynamics of various organisations developing several initiatives to promote the Azores in Santa Catarina.
