Praia da Vitória ,  January 28, 2019

More than 100 Azoreans employed or undergoing training to join eight companies already installed at Terceira Tech Island

The Vice-President of the Government stated in Praia da Vitória that Terceira Tech Island (TTI) is a project with impact on the island's economy. In this context, the intensive programming courses are an "opportunity" for 107 Azoreans to be already employed or undergoing training to work at the eight companies already installed under this project in about a year.

"Currently, Terceira Tech Island is a project with economic impact, mainly in terms of employment creation," said Sérgio Ávila. He spoke on the sidelines of the opening of the new facilities of the Code Academy, where the 4th intensive programming course has started with 35 trainees.

The Vice-President emphasised that national and international companies in the field of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) that are being installed in Terceira under this project promoted by the Government of the Azores will need 400 programmers by the end of 2020.

In this regard, the Government of the Azores has decided to reinforce the training capacity. Sérgio Ávila stressed that the 14-week courses are "an opportunity" that ensures "a well-paid and stable career with a huge future," regardless of previous academic qualifications or professional training.

"This is an opportunity regardless of their education or professional background, being also open to those who have a job they consider to be underpaid, those starting their career or even those who are in a situation of unemployment," added the government official. According to him, "programming is accessible, provided they are willing to work and learn, and have a great work capacity."

Sérgio Ávila highlighted the high rate of employability of these courses and the attractiveness of the career, stressing that the trainees who overcome this challenge "have practically guaranteed well paid jobs" and work from Terceira to the world.

For the Vice-President of the Government, this is an opportunity that will strengthen "economic growth and employment creation on Terceira Island and in the Azores."

The Terceira Tech Island project consists of a technological hub in Praia da Vitoria dedicated to the field of programming and software production for the provision of services. It was created following the identification of global market needs in the area of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) and the opportunity to install new economic activities that would replace those derived from Lajes Base.
