Increase of the productivity and improvement of the quality of the milk to face dismantling of quotas
The study ordered by the Government to the University of the Azores (UAç) on the efficiency and sustainability of the valuable chain of the milk in the Region recommends the reinforcement of the productivity and improvement of the quality as ways to face the eventual dismantling of the regime of quotas in the European Union.
The work, which report was already handed to the Executive of Carlos César, underlines, also, the importance of the improvement of the offer of products diverted for the efficiency of a “strategy of transition suited in the stability and competitiveness of the sector”.
The Government of the Azores is favourable to the maintenance of the regime of attribution of the maximum limits to the dairy production for each farmer in force in the European Union, for considering that the system benefits regions like the Azorean one, but, face to the possibility of dismantling of quotas, it decided to proceed with the study of alternative sceneries.
The Economy and Management Department of the UAç was implicated in the study delivered to the Executive.
The Azorean dairy production, corresponding to a third of the national one, represents one of the main economical activities of the Region.
