Greater involvement of citizens in environmental challenges depends on responses to their daily needs, says Vasco Cordeiro

The President of the Government said today that the success of responding to the challenges of environmental sustainability depends on the increasing involvement of communities, claiming that it is essential that this partnership responds to the needs and concerns of citizens' daily lives.

Vasco Cordeiro spoke in Paris, where he participated in the session "Promoting Commitment" under the Global Positive Forum, an initiative promoted by the Institut de l'Économie Positive.

According to him, one of the solutions involves a greater commitment of citizens in the strategies and policies to respond to these challenges. In this regard, public institutions have the responsibility to promote transparency by sharing information on the decisions taken in these matters.

Vasco Cordeiro pointed out the example of Corvo Island, where the population has decided to create a fishing restriction area that “was not imposed and was not the result of regulations imposed by law.”

"If we want to have more committed citizens, we should take into account their daily needs.  If we want to discuss climate change, we have to relate it to the lives of the people affected by these phenomena," stressed the government official.

Institut de l'Économie Positive was created in late 2018 by French economist Jacques Attali with the aim of contributing to specific solutions towards the accomplishment of economic, social and environmental goals for the benefit of present and future generations.
