Angra do Heroísmo ,  March 14, 2017

Azoreans students participated in the National Phase of School Cross Country 2016/2017

Young Azorean student Bruno Ávila (Manuel de Arriaga Secondary School) came in 9th place in the National School Cross Country in the Beginners category (male), among 174 participants, with a time of 7.49. At the competition held in Torres Vedras, the young athlete achieved the same score of last year's competition.

Also in this category, Miguel Rocha (Praia da Vitória Basic Education School) achieved the second highest score (28th) among eight Azorean students in competition, with a time of 8.16.

Elena Furk (Biscoitos Basic Education School) was placed 64th among 192 students in the Beginners' category (female), with a time of 7.44, while Margarida Garcia (Domingos Rebelo Secondary School) was placed 71st, with a time of 7.50.

In the Men's Youth category, which featured 178 participants, Diogo Ribeiro (Vitorino Nemésio Secondary School) came in 73rd place, with a time of 12.02, while Luís Bernardo (Tomás de Borba Secondary School) came in 108th place, with a time of 12.26.

In the same category (women's), Inês Gonzaga (Domingos Rebelo Secondary School) came in 89th place among 182 participants, with a time of 10.16. In turn, Tatiana Melo (Manuel de Arriaga Secondary School) came in 104th place, with a time of 10.36.

The Azorean representation, which included teachers Sandra Costa (Tomás de Borba Basic Education and Secondary School) and Hugo Parente (Manuel de Arriaga Secondary School), also took active part in the entertainment activities promoted by the competition organisation.

The National Phase of School Cross Country brought together about 1,200 students and teachers from different parts of the country. Azorean students represented "their" and "their" school community and "their" Azores with merit and sportsmanship. This is a further contribution of School Sports to overall development of students in the race for success.

This edition of School Cross Country registered involved the participation of 5,448 students in the Azores, more specifically 4,089 in the School Phase, 1,259 in the Regional Phase, 92 in the Regional Phase and 8 in the National Phase; the 42 regional schools of the archipelago were represented in the competition.
