Nuclear Medicine Company Will Operate from the Terceira Technological Park

Isopor, a company operating in the field of nuclear medicine, will be the first company to operate from the Terceira Technological Park, the Regional Secretary of Science, Technology and Equipment announced.

José Contente, speaking at the opening session of the 3rd Congress of Biotechnology of University of the Azores in the Pico da Urze Campus, underlined that the São Miguel and Terceira Technological Parks will only make sense if qualified personnel develop “good ideas, useful ideas that represent an added value for the region,” adding that the University of the Azores should provide a fundamental contribution towards this goal, not only qualifying people but also encouraging researchers to be pro-active.

“The time when the Regional Government funded display projects, that is, projects that would only sit on a shelf and would have no practical application is over. Today we fund research projects that transfer knowledge to industrial units, so they can produce a wide range of products, including medicines, beauty products, etc.”

“The future also lies in biotechnology. It is necessary for the university to have this entrepreneurial spirit so it can spread to the industrial units, so they can use this knowledge to manufacture products with a high added value. This is a fundamental step and fortunately there are already many people sensitive to this approach and some companies operating in the Azores, with more to come,” said the Regional Secretary.

José Contente equally added that the project for the Terceira Technological Park has been concluded and will start soon, representing an initial investment of 200,000 euros in the construction of the necessary infrastructures for the operation of companies in the area of high-end biotechnology.
