Angra do Heroísmo ,  February 07, 2020

Reinforcing the quality of services is to adjust them to the needs of the elderly, says Andreia Cardoso

The Regional Secretary for Social Solidarity stressed in Angra do Heroísmo the Regional Government's commitment to “increasingly reinforce the quality of services rendered to the elderly,” providing them with a response “as adjusted as possible to their needs."

Andreia Cardoso spoke during a visit to the São Francisco Xavier Social Centre for the Elderly in the parish of Raminho, where she signed two cooperation contracts with the institution.

One of the contracts, amounting to 15 thousand Euros, is intended to support the replacement of the existing ceramic tile flooring with new vinyl flooring, which will improve the building's thermal comfort, safety and hygiene.

The second contract will allocate more than 10 thousand Euros for the acquisition of geriatric equipment for the Elderly Home, taking into account that the current equipment is in poor condition due to the wear and tear of long years of use.

“This poor condition impairs the functioning of this service and the comfort of its users, especially the most dependent, and also puts an excessive burden on the staff, particularly nursing assistants. Therefore, this acquisition will improve the working and comfort conditions for users and employees,” said the Regional Secretary.

"The financial support that we agreed here today falls within the strategy implemented to provide the entire Region with a wide network of proximity and quality social responses in partnership with the hundreds of institutions working in this area," added the government official.

Andreia Cardoso also recalled that the support for the elderly has deserved, on the part of the Regional Government, “absolute priority in this goal of leaving no one behind, especially those who are in a more fragile situation."

“In the decision-making process on the support for the elderly, the Regional Government has been concerned with creating proximity responses to maintain, whenever possible, our elderly citizens close to their communities and close to their families in their parishes,” said the Regional Secretary.
