SIARAM site – Feeling and Interpreting the Azores Environment - with new contents

The luxuriant Planalto Central of Flores Islands and other places of intense hydrodynamic activity are among the new contents now available on the website. In the case of Flores, the project “Feeling, Interpreting the Azores Environment” provides pictures of the following crater lakes: Lagoa Branca, Lagoa Seca, Lagoa Negra, Lagoa Funda, Lagoa da Lomba, Lagoa Comprida and Poço da Alagoinha.

Regarding wetlands, one may found pictures of Algar do Carvão and Furnas do Enxofre on Terceira, Furna do Enxofre on Graciosa and the crater lakes of Caldeira de Santo Cristo and Caldeira dos Cubres on São Jorge.

In the new interpretation centres, special emphasis is put on Boqueirão Environmental Interpretation Centre, which is a place of reference for understanding the environmental aspects of Flores Island that also stands out for its modern architecture and the language used in the exhibition.

New contents are also available on the Biosphere Reserves of the Azores, represented by the islands of Corvo and Flores Graciosa which were distinguished with this award, being places of reference both locally and globally.

With regard to coastal areas, this project highlights the Fajãs da Caldeira de Santo Cristo and the Caldeira dos Cubres, two sites with unusual lagoon systems in the Azores, constituting one of the most important RAMSAR Protected Areas of the Archipelago.

The Caldeira de Santo Cristo is also only place in the Azores where clam species (Tapes decussatus) are to be found. In this context, special emphasis is also put on the research conducted by Aristides Silva on the introduction of this species in this site.
These contents may be accessed at: http://siaram.azores.gov.pt/novos conteudos.html.
