Lajes do Pico ,  July 03, 2020

Recovery from Hurricane Lorenzo at full “cruising speed” throughout the Region, says Vasco Cordeiro

The President of the Government stated today that the reconstruction of the damage caused by the passage of Hurricane Lorenzo is at “cruising speed” throughout the Region, stating that 65 percent of the approximately 160 situations identified have already been completed or are under way on several islands.

"Nine months after the passage of Hurricane Lorenzo, the balance we make is a good example that demonstrates not only the size of the reconstruction task, but above all our commitment and determination in this recovery process.

Regarding the 160 situations identified in the Region, about 65 percent are already completed or under way, 11 percent are at tendering stage and 20 percent are the project development stage," said Vasco Cordeiro on the first day of the statutory visit to Pico.

The President of the Government spoke at the presentation of the project to repair the breakwater of Lajes do Pico Port, also damaged by Hurricane Lorenzo in the early hours and morning of October 2. On the occasion, he stressed that the reconstruction planning on the various islands began the day after the storm, which caused damage estimated at more than 300 million Euros, most of which in port infrastructures.

In the case of Lajes das Flores Port, which was completely destroyed, Vasco Cordeiro stated that the emergency works for the protection of the embankment are already under way, a 22 million Euro investment essential to ensure the reliability of the regular transport of goods to the island.

“Simultaneously, we are working to move forward with the effective construction of a new port in Lajes das Flores early next year.

Overall, we are talking about an intervention that, in its various components, amounts to about 180 million Euros," said the government official.

“Our expectation is that, even during this summer, it will be possible to launch all public tenders for the recovery works of the ports damaged by Hurricane Lorenzo. The projects are already at the final stage of implementation or under testing in small-scale models at the National Civil Engineering Laboratory," representing a global investment of more than 250 million Euros, revealed the President of the Government.

In his speech, Vasco Cordeiro mentioned that these data clearly demonstrate not only the absolute priority given by the Regional Government to this process, but also another aspect that has been “essential for this reconstruction to be at full cruising speed nine months later."

“I speak to you of the solidarity expressed, without reservations, by the National Government in bearing 85 percent of the costs of the recovery from the damage caused by Hurricane Lorenzo, which has been essential if we are to make rapid progress in this task.

This is undoubtedly one of the greatest practical expressions of national solidarity with our Region, which, when needed, found a prompt and immediate response to help facing the major natural catastrophe that hit it," stressed the President of the Government.

Besides the reinforcement of the north head and the crown wall of the breakwater and the repair of the outer layer, the works of Lajes do Pico port, an investment of 15 million Euros, include the expansion of the breakwater to the south in approximately 100 metres.

“Therefore, this is a structural work for Lajes do Pico, which will also be better protected against flooding. The respective contract work procedures are expected to be launched as early as next month,” announced Vasco Cordeiro.

According to the President of the Government, the public investment effort on the island of Pico is not solely limited to the recovery of the damage caused by Hurricane Lorenzo, pointing out the example of the construction of the new passenger terminal at São Roque Port, an investment of about 3.5 million Euros.

“After the awarding of contract work in March, I can announce that, today, the Council of the Government will analyse the contract-programme for prior approval by the Court of Auditors. If everything goes according to normal, the consignment agreement will be signed soon for the beginning of this work, which will improve the comfort and safety in the transport of passengers and vehicles," said Vasco Cordeiro.
