Lina Mendes

Regional Government maintains commitment to improve teaching conditions for students and teachers

The Regional Secretary for Education and Training, Lina Mendes, visited the ongoing renewal and expansion works of the Madre Teresa da Anunciada Kindergarten and Elementary School in the village of Ribeira Seca, Municipality of Ribeira Grande, on Wednesday afternoon.

This is a municipal investment of about 1.4 million Euros, supported the Regional Government of the Azores under a development contract signed between the Regional Autonomous Administration and the Local Administration, with an estimated allocation of 210 thousand Euros.

The expansion works of the school include the construction of another four classrooms, a multipurpose gymnasium for sports and cultural activities, support rooms and sanitary facilities.
The Regional Secretary considered important to check the works on progress in order to schedule the opening of the newly built spaces, therefore pursuing the great goal set by the Government in the field of education, which is the creation and improvement of teaching conditions to ensure the well-being of students, teachers as well as of the non-teaching staff.

At the occasion, Lina Mendes stressed the effort undertaken by the Ribeira Grande City Hall to promote and develop Education in the municipality, noting that the expansion works will also enable the establishment of other work areas that will accommodate the 300 students from that village, which justifies this public investment.
Speaking to the Press, the Regional Secretary for Education and Training also mentioned the need to continue to invest in the improvement of regional schools, stressing the nearly 80% of school facilities in the Azores have been renewed.

With regard to other investments in school sector in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, Lina Mendes confirmed the existence of ongoing administrative procedures for the public call for tenders either for the renewal works of the Rabo de Peixe Basic Education School, whose first stage covers 20 classrooms, or for the construction of the new Gaspar Frutuoso School.
