The Regional Secretary for the Environment and the Sea was heard on Friday afternoon by the Economy Commission of the Legislative Assembly of the Azores on the proposal for a Regional Legislative Decree that regulates the provision of information to the user on products related to energy consumption.
As Álamo Meneses explained to journalists, the law will replace a 1991 Decree on “energy labelling of equipment that make heavy use of energy, such as refrigerators, washing machines, dryers and lamps,” among others.
The proposal stipulates “a set of obligations for those who sells them,” namely the prohibition of advertising slogans such as “environmentally friendly” or “save energy” to promote equipment that “is not included in the highest class of their category,” added the Regional Secretary.
With regard to new acquisitions, this document also requires the public entities to acquire “energy saving equipment in compliance with the rules already established by the European Union.”
In addition, Álamo Meneses added that “the rules on the use of standardised labels on the energy consumption of equipment are stipulated,” forcing seller to provide a document for each equipment “that must contain information on the energy and water spending as well as the comparison with standardised units.”
