Azores increase red seabream quota for 2017 by 34 tonnes

The Azores will be able to catch 34 tonnes more of red seabream for this year as a result of an amendment introduced to the consumption of the quota stipulated for this species.

The Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology states that "the Region now has the possibility of catching a total of 541 tonnes of red seabream during 2017," adding that this is "good news" for Azorean fishers and shipowners as "they may boost their income with the fishing of species of high commercial value."

According to Gui Menezes, the distribution of the 34 tonnes of red seabream by the islands of the archipelago "will be discussed with partners of the sector." Its consumption by the Azorean fleet will be limited to the quarter of the year, "when this species reach higher values on the first sale."

The Regional Secretary also noted that "this increase of the red seabream quota does not jeopardise the sustainability of this resource."
