Azorean Government celebrates World Day for Cultural Diversity on Terceira

The Azorean Government marks the World Day for Cultural Diversity through the organisation of various initiatives on Terceira Island with the aim of promoting cultural diversity in the Region, highlighting its richness and importance for Azorean society.

The World Day for Cultural Diversity is annually marked on May 21, coinciding this year with the Day of the Region. The celebration programme includes the activity "Poetry for Diversity" to take place on May 22 at the premises of Alpendre Theatre Group, partner entity, in Angra do Heroísmo; the session is scheduled for 9 PM.

The poetry session,  attended by the Regional Director for Communities, Paulo Teves, intends to disseminate poems from several countries that will be presented by Belarmino Ramos, Filomena Tavarela Ferreira, Luís Cabral, Maria Emília Lima, Valter Peres, Carla Soares and Bianca Mendes.

On May 22, 23 and 24, the Regional Government extends this initiative to several schools on Terceira Island, addressing the theme of cultural diversity and its benefits to the society with 4th form students.

Organised by the Regional Directorate for Communities, these activities fall within the Regional Government's policies to promote the relation between the peoples and cultures living in the archipelago as well as intercultural education among young people.

Proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2002, the Word Day for Cultural Diversity raises awareness for the importance of cultural diversity in today's societies, encouraging the respect for others and knowledge among peoples.

According to data from the Immigration and Borders Service, more than 3,000 immigrants from 80 countries are currently residing in the Azores.
