Azores participate in 89th Lisbon Book Fair

The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture, through the Regional Directorate for Culture, promotes the participation of the Azores in the 89th Lisbon Book Fair, an initiative sponsored by the Portuguese Publishers and Booksellers Associations that takes place at Eduardo VII Park from May 29 to June 16.
 
The participation of the Azores is primarily intended to disseminate works by Azorean authors or that address Azorean themes. In this context, the Azores Culture Pavilion (stands A 52, 54 and 56) will feature the following publishing entities: Regional Directorate for Culture; Amigos dos Açores Ecological Association; Montanheiros Association; Azorina - Society for Environmental Management and Nature; Municipal Councils of Horta, Angra do Heroísmo, Santa Cruz da Graciosa and Velas, and the Regional Centre for Handicrafts.
 
Additionally, the following entities will also be represented at the Azores Cultural Pavilion: Companhia das Ilhas; Divertiláxia; Azorean Institute of Culture; Cultural Institute of Ponta Delgada; Historical Institute of Terceira Island; José Carlos Sousa; Horta Cultural Centre; OMA - Azores Sea Observatory; Publiçor; Afonso Chaves Society; Turiscom; University of the Azores; Ver Açor Editores and Yolanda Corsépius.
 
This year, the publishers featured in this fair as well as the Regional Directorate for Culture have made available 828 book titles, corresponding to 2,485 publications. As usual, they can be purchased at a 20% and 30% discount, respectively.
 
In addition to this significant decrease in the public sale price, the Azores Culture Pavilion will select the "Book of the Day" on a daily basis as well as a book on sale; both have a 50% discount.
 
The "Book of the Day" and fair promotions will be extended to the Regional Directorate for Culture shops at the museums belonging to the Regional Network of Azorean Museums, the Public Libraries and Regional Archives of Angra do Heroísmo, Ponta Delgada and Horta, as well as to Arquipélago -Contemporary Arts Centre and the virtual bookshop.
 
The many selected works for "Book of the Day" are as follows: "Obras Completas de Maria Olímpia da Rocha Gil"; "Os Açores e o Atlântico. Estudos de História Económica (Séculos XV-XVIII)"; "Um Horizonte de Proximidades: Uma Topologia a partir da Coleção António Cachola," the catalogue to the exhibition of the same name held at Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre between October 2015 and February 2016 under the curatorship of Sérgio Mah, and the essay "A Baleação e o Estado Novo. Industrialização e organização corporativa (1937-1958)" by Francisco Maia Henriques, distinguished with an Honorable Mention in the 2014 edition of the "Daniel de Sá "Humanities Prize.
 
Besides the sale of books with significant discounts, the Azores Culture Pavilion also promotes, under this year's cultural programming, book launches and autograph sessions.
 
On June 6, it will host the presentation of the work "A Lenda do Homenzinho das Quatro Estações" by Teresa Vicente at the APEL Auditorium at 7 PM. On the following day, the work " Açores na Filosofia e nas Ciências" by José Luís Brandão da Luz will be presented at 8 PM.
 
On June 9, an autograph session with José Carlos Costa, author of "Paraíso Açórico" will be held at the pavilion at 3 PM.
 
The Azores Culture Pavilion of the 89th Lisbon Book Fair may be visited from Monday to Thursday from 12:30 PM to 10 PM; Fridays and holiday eves from 12:30 PM to 12 AM; Saturdays from 11 AM to 12 AM, and Sunday and holidays from 11 AM to 10 PM.
 
Its operation is ensured by technicians of the Regional Directorate for Culture with the collaboration of five Azorean students.
