Santa Cruz das Flores ,  August 18, 2016

Government of the Azores invested over 18 million Euros in Flores' port infrastructures in the past six years, says Vítor Fraga

The Regional Secretary for Tourism and Transport stated in Santa Cruz das Flores that the Regional Government has invested over 18.3 million Euros in Flores' port infrastructures in the last six years. According to him, this investment is essential to the improvement of the quality of life, particularly in terms of accessibility.

Vítor Fraga spoke at the signing ceremony of the consignment agreement of the works for the rehabilitation of Poças Port. The Regional Secretary stressed the great relevance of this project, "namely to the island of Flores and the Western Group." In this context, he added that it will result in a significant improvement in the conditions of all users, whether in a professional or recreational context.

The work has a completion period of 24 months. It represents an investment of nearly 10 million Euros that will allow the construction of a new breakwater for the entire port basin with 302 metres in length, the removal of several rocky outcrops and the dredging of the access canal to the wharf This intervention will improve the general operating and safety conditions of this port.

In addition to benefiting passenger transport, Vítor Fraga noted that the works will optimise the approach to the wharf by all maritime tourism vessels or fishing vessels; the minimum width of the access canal will increase to 22 metres.

With regard to Santa Cruz das Flores wharf, the Government will improve port operations and enhance the safety of the manoeuvres to exit the inner bay. There is also an intervention intended to improve the protection of the seafront near the port, which will include the installation of a breakwater light of about five metres height.

In his speech, the Regional Secretary recalled the "substantial investment made by the Government of the Azores on Flores in terms of port infrastructures," which amounted to more than 18.3 million Euros.

Vítor Fraga stressed that the investment was made taking into consideration the Government's major goal: "working towards the improvement of the living conditions of all Azoreans."

In this context, he recalled some of the contract works that have been carried out in Flores' ports, including the construction of the Nautical Recreation Centre, the construction of the Maritime Terminal, the improvement of Lajes das Flores Port, the rehabilitation of the breakwater head, the construction of a Ro-Ro ramp and the contract work for the extension of the wharf.

Vítor Fraga pointed out that the Government of the Azores has made a total investment over 185 million Euros in the improvement of ports in the past eight years, which add up to more the works in progress amounting to 41.5 million Euros.

The Regional Secretary emphasised the importance of ports for the progress of a Region such as the Azores. They allow us to respond to new challenges, improve accessibility, foster the emergence of new opportunities for the regional economy and address rehabilitation needs due to the maritime aggressiveness of the North Atlantic sea, "where no natural protection is particularly evident."

Vítor Fraga considered that the work launched today "is a clear example of the care" given to the archipelago's "basic infrastructures." The government official stressed the importance of its implementation, "even when they involve large sums, even when bad weather damage them and even when there are budget constraints imposing reduction of costs, moderation and absolute rigour in the management of public resources."
