Angra do Heroísmo ,  March 18, 2019

Azores join celebrations of World Poetry Day

The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Public Libraries and Regional Archives under its administration, joins the celebrations of the World Poetry Day, which is celebrated annually on March 21.

At the Ponta Delgada Public Library and Regional Archive, there is a collection of love letters and poetry manuscripts belonging to its document collection on public display until March 31. The exhibition is a joint celebration of Valentine's Day, marked on February 14, and the World Poetry Day.

The documents on display feature letters and poems written by renowned personalities in the area of culture, such as Natália Correia, Vitorino Nemésio, Teófilo Braga and Almeida Garrett.

With the aim of bringing poetry closer to library users, this institution will also present a poetry roll containing copies of the transcriptions of poetry manuscripts on display and those from other authors, inviting visitors to "collect" a poem.

In turn, the Luís da Silva Ribeiro Public Library and Regional Archive in Angra do Heroísmo will join these celebrations by promoting various activities.

The "DiVerse Poems" initiative will be held on Thursday, March 21, at 9 PM. This activity includes the reading of six contemporary poets by António Braga, Cláudia Cardoso, Dulce Brasil, Luís Peixoto, Nélio Lourenço and Sandra Garcia. On the same day, there is the concert "Florbela Espanca in Fado" featuring Fábio Ourique, Tiago Lima, Pedro Morais and Paulo Cunha to mark the 125th anniversary of the poet's birth.

Additionally, the Library promotes, starting from March 23, an exhibition of poetry books with the aim of disseminating this literary genre among readers.

Under these celebrations, the João José da Graça Public Library and Regional Archive in Horta hosts a Poetry Recital on March 21 at 6:30 PM. It will also include musical and inclusive dance moments.

This activity counts on the special participation of Manuel de Arriaga Secondary School, Horta Basic Education and Secondary School, Horta Vocational Training School, Senior University of Faial, CAO - Occupational Activity Centre of "Santa Casa da Misericórdia" (social solidarity institution) and the Community of Readers - "Tea with Books."

In addition to this initiative, the Library also promotes a book exhibition entitled "Poets from Around the World," which will be open from March 21 to 28.

World Poetry Day was established in 1999 at the 30th General Conference of UNESCO with the goal of stimulating reading and writing as well as of promoting the publication and teaching of poetry.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
