Diaspora Council is unique opportunity to congregate the Azorean People, says Regional Director for the Communities

The Regional Director for the Communities stated today in New Bedford, USA, that the newly created Azorean Diaspora Council “a unique opportunity” to congregate the Azorean People and to promote their active participation in the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

“After hundreds of years of emigration since the 17th century to various destinations, especially to North and South America, we now have a diaspora that identifies itself with our Region. There are thousands of people who feel Azoreans, both those who emigrated in the 1960s and 1970s to this country as well as those who descend from the people who headed to Santa Catarina 270 years ago, for example,” pointed out Paulo Teves.

“The importance of this huge human heritage not only deserves our recognition and appreciation. It should be also promoted and stimulated so that it can converge with the aspirations of our diaspora and with the current reality of our islands and their challenges,” added the Regional Director.

During an interview with the Portuguese Channel, Paulo Teves stated that, "as we travel through the Azorean communities, we find several differences between them, namely how they are organised, how they interact with the host society or even how they define strategies that address their needs.”

Despite these differences, he stressed that there is also a "common denominator," which is "a huge pride of belonging to the Azores and a desire to become closer to their origins."

“It is with this determination that the Azorean Diaspora Council has defined the active participation of Azoreans around the world in the Region's development project as its main goal. In congregating diversified experiences and projecting itself in several areas, this Council will contribute to the debate and definition of common strategies," stated the Regional Director.

Established by the Regional Legislative Decree No. 18/2019/A, of August 5, the Azorean Diaspora Council is chaired by the President of the Government of the Azores.

This is an advisory council of the Regional Government that is primarily intended to ensure the participation, collaboration and hearing of the Azoreans around the world in the development project of the Azores.
