Horta ,  November 14, 2017

Education, culture and sport have "adequate" funds for 2018, says Avelino Meneses

The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture stated in Horta that the Investment Plan of the Azores for 2018 in the area of education "adequately" ensures the evolution of the ongoing works in regional schools.

Avelino Meneses spoke to journalists at the end of the hearing at the Committee on Social Affairs of the Legislative Assembly, confirming the plan provides for the continuation of ongoing works in schools located in Calheta on the island of São Jorge and in Canto da Maia School on the island of São Miguel.

The Government's proposals also include the beginning of the contract works in several schools: Capelas school, in process of being awarded, Arrifes school, in the revision process, Rabo de Peixe school, whose process will have to be "necessarily resumed" by court order, and Lagoa School. All schools are located on the island of São Miguel.

The Secretary for Education also stressed that the Investment Plan for the next year is also endowed with funds for the rehabilitation and maintenance of school facilities These interventions will comprise Antero de Quental, Ribeira Grande, Ginetes and Lagoa schools (São Miguel Island), Jerónimo Emiliano de Andrade and Vitorino Nemésio schools (Terceira Island) as well as Flores and Santa Maria schools.

The support to school welfare, vocational training schools, private school establishments and educational projects are other actions reinforced in next year's plan in order to "ensure the continuity of the ProSucesso programme," said the Regional Secretary.

In regard to culture, Avelino Meneses emphasised that the Government will carry out two "major" works next year, namely the Francisco Lacerda Museum on São Jorge Island and the Airport Cinema on Santa Maria Island.

In addition to these new works, the Government will complete the Vila do Porto Museum Centre and the Time Museum of Corvo Eco Museum “very soon." According to him, these works will "conclude the Government's purpose of endowing each of our islands with a quality museum unit that will promote cultural dynamics and improve the tourism offer."

Furthermore, the Regional Secretary said the increase of funds registered in different projects ensures the importance of sport in the Azores, reiterating it as an "activity for all."
