Regional Director for Youth highlights entrepreneurial character of young Azoreans

The Regional Director for Youth highlighted in Santa Cruz das Flores the "entrepreneurial character" that young Azoreans have demonstrated over the last few years.

Lúcio Rodrigues spoke Sunday at the Flores and Corvo Tourism Meeting welcomed the four young entrepreneurs in the tourism sector who organised this initiative for the second consecutive year with the support of local authorities and the Regional Government. According to him, this is "a practical example of young entrepreneurship," but also an example of "the successful organisation of large events on any island of the Azores."

"It is the entrepreneurial spirit and this willingness to make things happen that unite us and promotes our regional cohesion," stressed he government official.

Lúcio Rodrigues highlighted the Azorean youth entrepreneurship figures, revealing that the Entrepreneurship Education programme "has already trained to 20 thousand people for entrepreneurship in school context, from elementary to secondary education, over the past eight years."

The Regional Director stressed the importance of young people "thinking outside the conventional classroom context," which "is quite evident by the number of young talents who have revealed themselves over the last few years."

With regard to tourism, Lúcio Rodrigues addressed the operation of the "Environment and Tourism" sub-programme, an initiative under the Youth Free Time Occupation programme (OTL-J).

"OTL-J enables young people to have experiences in a non-formal learning context or in active work context. It also fosters the acquisition of key skills that will be vital to the personal, social and professional lives of young people, while contributing to a healthy occupation of their free time," stressed the government official.

According to the Regional Director, this sub-programme also has the potential "to promote future professional activities related to the environment and tourism" as well as to "promote the preservation and protection of environmental heritage."

"We want participating and integrated young people who are involved in the construction of our land and who feel good here, while contributing to the protection of our unique natural heritage," said Lúcio Rodrigues.
