The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Ponta Delgada Public Library and Regional Archive (BPARPD), has recently added to its collection a volume of correspondence from José do Canto's family donated by his heirs.
 
It is a bound volume containing the transcription of a series of letters under the title "The Family of José do Canto - letters from 1838-1887." The compilation was made by Maria Guilhermina do Canto Goulart, great-granddaughter of José do Canto.
 
The original letters were also donated to the Library.
 
This collection of letters is an important, interesting and vast source of information regarding the society and the period it portrays.
