Angra do Heroísmo Museum evokes royal visit of 1901

Next Saturday, April 21, he Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Angra do Heroísmo Museum, will organise a dinner evoking the royal visit of King Carlos and Queen Amélia to the Azores in 1901.

The event begins in the "4th moment" of the exhibition entitled "From the Sea and Land ... history in the Atlantic." It features pieces documenting the stay of the Portuguese monarchs on Terceira island, namely various pieces by King Carlos, "Vitória," a 19th century carriage that transported the monarchs, and the ogive-shaped glass works that once belonged to "D. Amélia," among other pieces of that time.

The reading of a greeting to the sovereigns, written by Vieira Mendes and published in the "A União" newspaper on July 1 of that year, will be read at the occasion.

The dinner, catered by Terceira Golf Club, will be served in the Chapter Hall. The menu is inspired on the dinner offered to the monarchs at the Royal Palace, now designated as Capitães Generais Palace.

The initiative also includes a lecture by José Guilherme Reis Leite on the political context of that time, an explanation of the programme by Ana Almeida and Carla Devessa, and a musical moment featuring Elena Kharambula, Mikhayl Roussal and Orest Grystsyuk.

The room where the dinner takes place will also display some pieces belonging to the Angra do Heroísmo Museum's collection, currently in storage, depicting several moments of the royal visit.

Those interested in participating should make a previous registration at the email [email protected] or by telephone 295 240 800.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
