Workshop on food security brings together 120 economic operators

The Vice-Presidency of the Government of the Azores promotes a workshop on "HACCP and Associated Flexibility" in Ponta Delgada on September 6 and 7. There are already 120 registered economic operators.

HACCP - Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point is a system of hazard analysis and control of critical points created to prevent risks to consumers in terms of food safety.

The mandatory implementation of HACCP processes has been in force for several years but continues to be a topic that raises some questions for food business operators, from production, transportation, processing, storage or confection to final consumer sale.

Given the variety of food sectors involved, which are of relevance to the Region's economy, such as fish, meat and dairy products, and increasingly, the restaurant sector, the workshop will address the implementation of HACCP will be addressed in each one of them.

At this meeting, economic operators and technicians will hear national speakers on various fields of expertise and take part in discussions. They will be able to realise that the requirements of the HACCP system are flexible enough to be applicable in all situations, including small companies, if this does not compromise food safety goals.

Developed by IRAE - Regional Inspectorate of Economic Activities in collaboration with the Directorate-General of Food and Veterinary Medicine (DGAV), the initiative takes place at the Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory. It is primarily intended to contribute to the compliance with rules that guarantee public health and food quality, through an educational approach.

IRAE is the regional administrative authority specialising in food safety and economic inspection. This entity is responsible for the assessment and report of risks in the food chain, through inspection actions and provision of information on compliance with regulatory legislation.
