Number of unemployed in the Azores is the lowest of the last nine years, according to INE

The Regional Director for Employment and Vocational training pointed out that the employment data released today by the National Statistics Institute (INE) "confirm the downward trend of the unemployment rate in the Azores."

"According to INE, the number of unemployed in the fourth quarter of 2019, that is 9,128, is the lowest in the current series of the Employment Survey, which began in the first quarter of 2011, nine years ago," said Paula Andrade. In this regard, she stressed that the data validate “the consolidation of the downward trend in unemployment and employment growth that has been recorded since 2011."

Unemployment registers a decrease of 11.4% in year-on-year terms, which represents 1,170 fewer unemployed," the Regional Director said, adding that, in annual terms, the 2019 average is also the lowest value for the past nine years.

The Regional Director also stressed that "2019 registered not only the lowest number of unemployed, but also the highest number of employees and the highest working population figure in the current series."

In turn, Paula Andrade stated that the 7.6% unemployment rate is the second lowest since 2011 and that the 2019 annual rate stood at 7.9%, which is lower than the 8.6% figure of the previous year and the forecasts of the macroeconomic scenario in the Region's Budget.

"It is also important to note the continued decline in the annual unemployment rate since 2013, when it reached 17.0%, representing a decrease to less than half," said the government official.

The Regional Director also highlighted the youth unemployment rate, which is the second lowest in the current series of the Employment Survey: 9.2 percentage points lower than in the same period of the previous year. She also added that "the average annual employed population in 2019 stood at 113,665, corresponding to an increase of 1,866 employees (+1.7%) compared to 2018.

“Considering a longer period, i.e., between 2013 and 2019, there is an increase of 14,482 jobs in this period, which represents an average annual employment growth rate of 2.3%,” noted Paula Andrade.

Thus, employment in the Azores has grown consecutively since 2013, when 99,183 employees were registered, reaching 113,665 jobs in 2019.
Regarding the country, the reduction in the unemployment rate in the Azores was the second highest among the seven regions, both in terms of the same period of the previous year and in terms of the annual rate. The Regional Director also revealed that, while, on the one hand, the country practically maintained the same rates as in 2018, "the Azores, on the other hand, registered a considerable reduction in the unemployment rate in 2019,” stressed Paula Andrade.
Also considering the INE data, and with regard to the same quarter of the previous year, the unemployment rate decreased by 0.9 percentage points and there are 872 more employed Azoreans in the fourth quarter of 2019, compared to the previous quarter.

“The data released by INE today, along with other results that have been released, confirm that the Regional Government's policy, based on the increase of public and private investment, the revitalisation of economic activity and the creation of more and better employment, has worked,” said the Regional Director.
