The Vice-Presidency of the Government, through the Regional Centre for Handicrafts (CRAA), promotes the "Azores Handicrafts" showcase at the "Lar, Campo e Mar” Fair that will be held at Alameda do Mar in Ponta Delgada from May 24 to 30.

The "Azores Handicrafts" project is aimed at the organisation of a series of handicraft market on different islands, showcasing the best we produce in the Azores and enhancing the visibility of regional handicraft companies. Besides the assertion of the distinctive identity of the territory, these events are also a way of testing the economic viability of products, while promoting their quality and introducing modern concepts applies to handicraft production.

This year, the event features products from 52 Handicraft Production Units (UPA) from the islands of São Miguel, Pico, Faial and Terceira that have applied for Incentive Scheme for the Development of Handicrafts (SIDART).

This showcase displays several handmade productions, namely Holy Christ of Miracles "registos" (representations), "lapinha" (sea-themed) nativity scenes, embroidery, lace, textiles, whale bone, fish scales, jewellery, tin and iron works, leather and wood works, glass works, wicker, puppetry, aromatic and medicinal herbs, and plant fibres.

Additionally, the event will also enhance the visibility of products certified under the "Azores Handicrafts" collective brand, through the 21 certified companies certified at the event.

Accordingly, certification is crucial for the regional strategy towards the preservation and support of traditional handicrafts, safeguarding the quality and authenticity of production.

Currently, the "Azores Handicrafts" brand encompasses 22 certified handicraft areas and nearly one hundred handicraft companies bearing the certification seal.
