Biography
Sofia de Medeiros

Born on: 8/9/1975

Sofia de Medeiros was born in 1975 in the city of Ponta Delgada (S. Miguel Island, Azores) where she lives and works.

She holds a degree in Sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, having studied in England with a scholarship granted under the Socrates/Erasmus programme. She also holds a Master's Degree in Art History from Lusíada University and has attended several courses in different artistic areas.

Sofia Medeiros has organised solo exhibitions since 1996, including the following ones: "Árvore - Camaleão" at Ponta Delgada Public Library and Regional Archive; "Naperon" at Fonseca Macedo Art Gallery; "Enfim sós" at Angra do Heroísmo Museum; "Lugares de repouso e solidão" at Ponta Delgada Academy of Arts; "O Voo" at Sines Cultural Centre and Lagos Cultural Centre.

She has taken part in group exhibitions since 1997: "Desafios" at Maia Tobacco Museum; Collective Exhibition 2010 at Fonseca Macedo Art Gallery, Ponta Delgada; "aTRItos" at Fonseca Macedo Art Gallery. She has participated in the Lisbon Contemporary Art Fair since 2006, being represented by Fonseca Macedo Art Gallery.

She also participates in biennial events, symposia and competitions, such as the III International Sculpture Symposium in Ferro de Abrantes; she won the 1st prize - Sculpture JOV-Art 97.

Sofia Medeiros was involved in other artistic projects in the areas of traditional weaving (Azores Combo project) and contemporary dance (Ballet Teatro Paz Contemporary Dance Company). She is featured at Anamnese (online information platform on Portuguese contemporary art) since 2004.

The works of Sofia Medeiros make up several public collections: Presidency of the Regional Government of the Azores; ARTCA, Regional Directorate for Culture; Lagoa Secondary School; Ponta Delgada Public Library and Regional Archive; Angra do Heroísmo Museum; Loures and Abrantes City Halls.

Her works are also part of private collections, including the Convent of Orada Foundation, among others.
