The Lajes terminal will be provided with free access wireless internet for companies and passengers who pass through this airport, starting this Thursday.
“This is another investment of the Regional Government which allows new dimensions of knowledge and the interaction between people and companies, which includes the Azores in this digital platform in the centre of the Atlantic. It is essential to develop a project of this nature,” stated the Regional Secretary for Science, Technology and Infrastructures at the opening of the network.
This initiative had already been implemented on the Cohesion Islands (Santa Maria, Flores, Corvo, São Jorge and Graciosa) where the busiest public places are equipped with free hi-fi network.
In a second phase of this project, interactive boards will be installed in the hi-fi hotspots, which will enable citizens to access a range of information on services or links that may become “digital maps of the islands containing useful information in this modern era of digital inclusion,” added the Regional Secretary.
For José Contente, the access to internet “is itself a sign of a democratic society since it allows a greater participation of citizens in several social and economic projects, amongst others.”
In addition to the 8 mbps speed hi-fi network, the equipment installed in the Lajes terminal, also includes power plugs to facilitate internet access without using the laptop’s battery.
