"Volta ao Caldeirão" trail on Corvo Island reopened on Friday

The "Volta ao Caldeirão" trail, located on Corvo Island Natural Park, was reopened on Friday by Vítor Fraga, Regional Secretary for Tourism and Transport, on the European Day of Parks.

With an extension of 4.8 kilometres, this trail was recovered by the services of the Regional Secretariats for Tourism and Transport and for Natural Resources, which have also installed signs. Hence, residents and visitors will be able enjoy this emblematic pedestrian trail on the island Corvo, classified as Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

Given its diversified ecosystem, the Corvo "Caldeirão" (volcanic crater) was classified as a Ramsar site. In addition to being an important wetland, it is also the most important site of that island.

The Corvo Natural Park has a significant biodiversity as well as a wide variety of habitats, including 48 Azorean endemic plants.

The nesting of important seabird species is one of the reasons that justify the international importance of the island, being the place where the major nesting colony of Cory's Shearwater birds is located.

The Regional Secretariat for Natural Resources, through the Regional Directorate for the Environment, celebrates, for the first time, the European Day of Parks across the archipelago; the celebrations will continue throughout the weekend.

In the context of these celebrations, there is an ongoing contest under the theme 'O meu parque. A Minha Paixão. A Minha História." (My park. My Life. My Story.).

With this initiative, participants are encouraged to share their passion for nature, either through a story, a song, a photograph, a film, a poem or any other format.

The works may be directly submitted at the services of Natural Parks, sent by email to the addresses [email protected] or [email protected] until June 3.

The European award, to which all works sent to regional Natural Parks were submitted, will be announced on June 5, World Environment Day.

In the context of this challenge, each Natural Park will celebrate this date with an event to disseminate one or several Protected Areas, which will be released at the following address parquesnaturais.azores.gov.pt.
