Ponta Delgada ,  June 02, 2009

Thousands of people celebrated Children’s Day and Day of the Autonomous Region at the 21st Century Park

Thousands of families were at the 21st Century Park to celebrate Children’s Day yesterday in a joint initiative promoted by the Regional Secretariat for Science, Technology and Infrastructures and by the Child Support Institute.

The celebration of Children’s Day also included the values of autonomy, thereby celebrating the Day of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, stressed the Regional Secretary for Science, Technology and Infrastructures.

At the closing of these activities, José Contente mentioned that “the Government of the Azores has promoted a large party, associating, in an interesting approach, the Children’s Day and the Day of the Autonomous Region. In fact, combining the force of youth, the values and the authenticity of children with the Regional Autonomy, which is also a value, but above all it is a feeling of the Azoreans, was the best of way of celebrating the Children’s Day.”

Throughout the day, dozens of activities were held, such as using inflatable devices, face paintings, clowns, mechanical bull and Dino lake, among others, in addition to the park’s own educational games. These activities pulled in hundreds of children who celebrated their day with great joy and dynamism.

Snacks, hats and Azorean flags were distributed, thus reassuring the values of ‘Azoreanity’ and of Autonomy.

“The thousands and thousands of people who were here to celebrate the Children’s Day and the Autonomy Day have demonstrated that they are effectively closer to the significance of the Regional Autonomy, and that they are always available to express themselves on the occasion of Regional celebrations which have a great significance for our people,” reassured the Secretary in a statement to the media.

In addition to the different leisure activities, the programme for the Children’s Day also included a hip hop and aerobics dance show, featuring the students of the Corpore Gymnasium, as well as a music show featuring The New Kids.

José Contente took the opportunity to announce the musical nights that will be held during the summer. The 21st Century Park will hold a weakly karaoke sessions for those who enjoy singing and dancing.

“This is a fundamental space for this city for the reason that it was able to congregate not only the modernity, but also the security; therefore, we will increasingly focus on shows of this nature, creating a garden for festivities where music plays a privileged role, where youngsters may put their skills into practice and promote their potentialities,” announced the Secretary.

José Contente addressed the hundreds of families that were at the park, emphasising that the cultural and leisure activities will continue to be a priority at the 21st Century Park, a green space located in the centre of Ponta Delgada with permanent surveillance.

There are numerous scheduled activities for the Park this summer season. The Secretary added that “we will increasingly turn this space into a garden of music, into a garden of youth, into a garden that congregates the force of our people.”
