The Regional Government of the Azores will approve a set of changes to the fares charged by collective passenger transport operators at a meeting of the Council of the Government to take place this year.
These changes are primarily intended to reduce costs for frequent passengers and promote the use of public transport as an alternative to private transport.
The categories “passe social” (social pass), which are being developed by the Regional Secretariat for Science, Technology and Infrastructures, will increase the number of passengers and the reduction of fares, thus mobilising the application of funds for the Region.
The new measures will enter into force on January 1, 2011 and will be made public after the approval of the Regional Annual Plan and Budget for 2011, following the ongoing reassessment of the respective financial impact and its compliance with availability requirements.
Thus initiative is the result of the Government’s Programme as well as of a Resolution adopted by the Legislative Assembly of the Azores regarding a proposal presented by the Parliamentary Group of the Socialist Party.
