Ponta Delgada ,  August 04, 2020

Public tender for construction of Bypass Road to São Roque in Ponta Delgada launched today

The Regional Government, through the Regional Secretariat for Transport and Public Works, launched today the public tender for the construction of the Bypass Road to Regional Road no. 1-1. in São Roque, whose opening notice was published in the Official Journal.

For the Regional Secretary for Transport and Public Works, “this represents a safe step towards its full implementation,” an investment amounting to 900 thousand Euros with a completion period of 180 days.

The project was presented this morning, as part of the Regional Government's visit to S. Miguel. According to Ana Cunha, “the Regional Government will create an alternative road to the current regional road, which crosses the urban area of the parish of São Roque. This solution will solve two constraints that currently exist: on the one hand, the constraints in terms of pedestrian traffic, due to the lack of footpaths, and, on the other hand, the lack of parking spaces for residents and costumers who frequent establishments located in that area.”

The project includes the construction of a 450-metre-long bypass road, located to the north section of the current regional road, between Rua das Maricas and the São Roque Islet area. There are also plans for the construction of a roundabout next to São Roque Elementary School and Kindergarten, which will lead to speed reduction in the area and ensure smooth traffic flow.

This bypass road will have a dual seven-metre-wide carriageway flanked by footpaths of variable width. Additionally, the project provides for the planting of trees and the installation of public lighting to ensure adequate landscape integration.

In the western area, the intervention includes the construction of a car park, where about 40 spaces will be made available, both for the school and for residents.

On the opposite side, the existing parking area and the bus stop will be maintained, and a parking bay will be built at the eastern end of the bypass road.

“With this project, the Regional Government will fulfil another commitment to improve the accessibility in one of the urban road sections of Ponta Delgada, while ensuring the promotion of smooth mobility and urban redevelopment," said the Secretary for Public Works.

Today, the Government also presented the project for the redevelopment of the southern section of the same Regional Road, which will be carried out after the completion of the works contract for the construction of the bypass road, covering an extension of approximately 400 metres between Rua das Maricas and the São Roque Islet area.

The redevelopment of the southern section will include the construction of footpaths on both sides of the road, using endogenous materials, as well as the construction of a bicycle lane. As Ana Cunha added, “road traffic will flow in one direction only, i.e., in Ponta Delgada - Lagoa direction, as two-way traffic will be diverted to the new bypass road."

The 200 thousand-Euro work will be carried out by the Regional Directorate for Public Works, through direct administration, creating conditions for pedestrian, cycling and road mobility on one of the busiest roads in the Azores.

“These interventions are part of what moves us forward: working to improve the quality of life of the Azorean people. We spend a good deal of time travelling, either by car or public transport for a variety of reasons and also on foot. We can and must make road traffic as safe and comfortable as possible," said the Regional Secretary.
