Interventions in regional roads are extremely important for safety, stresses Ana Cunha

The Regional Secretary for Transport and Public Works highlighted in Ponta Delgada the importance of the interventions carried out by the Regional Government in regional roads. They are mainly intended to ensure the improvement of safety conditions for road users, reducing constraints and assuring more quality of life to residents.

Ana Cunha spoke after the visit to the final phase of the contract work for the stabilisation of two slopes overlooking the Regional Road no. 1-1 in the village of Feteiras. According to her, these are "extremely important interventions, because they aim to ensure the safety of vehicle users as well as of pedestrians."

The Regional Secretary also stressed that these works fall within "the Regional Government's policy to improve safety conditions on all regional roads and the quality of life of the Azorean population."

About the work visited today, Ana Cunha pointed out that some slopes had some "stability problems" and it was necessary to carry out interventions.

One of the interventions was carried out using projected shotcrete and another involved the use of soil nailing and mesh, which included the drainage of the slope.

The contract work was awarded to the company Açorgeo for the amount of 139 thousand Euros with a completion period of 60 days; the work has already completed.

Ana Cunha revealed that another intervention will soon be launched for a second section of the same road in the village of Ginetes. This area "also has instability problems in the embankment slope, where the subsidence of the platform is already visible. The intervention will cover an extension of about 50 metres."

The Regional Secretary noted that the recommended solution involves the diversion of the road from the slope, adding that "the road will recede about 200 metres from the embankment slope."

"The road will have to be rebuilt and redrawn in that area to divert precisely from the area that is subsiding," stated the government official.

This contract work includes earthworks, excavation, drainage and the paving of the new road section.

The work has estimated budget of 150 thousand Euros and a completion period of about two months.
