Government of the Azores authorises the construction of the CTBTO IS42 Infrasound Station on Graciosa
The Government of the Azores, through the Regional Secretariat for Science, Technology and Infrastructures, has authorised the construction of the IS42 Infrasound Station on the island of Graciosa which will be administered by the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).
The CTBTO IS42 Station to be built on Graciosa will be one of the 60 infrasound stations of the International Monitoring System, allowing a better coverage of the North Atlantic area.
In addition to integrating the global observation network that was established with the purpose of ensuring the compliance with the provisions in the Treaty on the prohibition of nuclear tests, the aforementioned station, which will be operated by the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Risk Assessment of the University of the Azores, will also integrate the volcano and earthquake surveillance network of the Azores.
This infrastructure will rise the Region to international prominence in the context of emblematic monitoring projects in the field of science and technology, which are supported by international agreements for the maintenance of world peace and security of the populations. Therefore, the implementation of this new monitoring station represents another commitment of the Azorean Government in the implementation of qualifying and structuring projects in the Azores.
The completion of the phase of surveying, project planning and preparatory works, have created the necessary conditions for the commencement of the works which will be carried out by the company Aerosolutions, LLC, USA.
