Ponta Delgada ,  December 22, 2008

Regional secretary for Science, Technology and Infrastructures delivering an award

Government challenges athletic clubs for the resource to the new technologies

The Azorean economy has in the sea one of its main foundations, being the sea activities faced by the Government like one of the most important axes of development of the Region.

The idea was expressed by the regional secretary for Science, Technology and Infrastructures in the Ponta Delgada Naval Club Champions Gala, which he presided, on Sunday night, in representation of the president of the Regional Government.

“We have at our disposal a quite invaluable asset, not only for the current economy, the hypercluster of the sea economy”, which has been one of the priorities of the Azorean Executive, supported José Contente, enhancing, in a specific way, the athletic nautical sports.

Consolidating the athletic professionalism in a way to guarantee that the Azores should be one of the regions of the country with bigger number of federated athletes, getting levels of excellence at national and international level, promoting the regional certification of the technical and pedagogic competences and creation of a portal for diffusion and promotion of the Azorean sport constitute measures that the regional secretary said being commitments of the Government.

On the other side, José Contente challenged the social and athletic institutions of the Region “to associate the technologies of information and communication to the activities” that they develop, appealing to the continued commitment in the new technologies, whether in terms of distant training, e-learning, whether as privileged vehicle of information and communication between the associates and even between other clubs and associations.

Before the new projects of the Naval Club for next year, the regional secretary guaranteed the continuity of the public supports, because the Government understands the athletic activity, namely that which is connected with the sea, “like a pole of reference, and that must be of excellence from here for the future, we have to be thrown at national and international level”.

In the ceremony of attribution of prizes to all the athletes, leaders and partners who contributed for the development of the club this year, José Contente delivered the prize of Best Athlete of the Year.
