Ponta Delgada ,  July 29, 2009

Government announces another four panoramic leisure areas on S. Miguel

The associations and the environmentalists “should not confound scientific concepts with partisan preconceptions,” the Regional Secretary for Science, Technology and Infrastructures said today at the opening of the Barreiros panoramic scenic overlook and space for picnics located on the Estrada Regional da Ribeira Grande, a space that combines leisure and the landscape integration of the surrounding area.
According to the Regional Secretary, “we need that those who support the ecology know that we may take advantage of the environment, enhancing its management as well as its resources at a sustainable level.”
José  Contente also mentioned that it is fundamental that “this constructive spirit, regarding the landscape integration and the development, should be put into practice in the Azores every day and that the environmental association and some recent environmentalists should know what ecology is and, for example, what an ecological succession is.”
“At the ceremony that marked the official conclusion of the works, carried out by direct administration, José Contente praised the work carried out by the workers of the Regional Secretariat for Science, Technology and Infrastructures (SRCTE), as they were able to create a unique and pleasant space, with regional materials, fully respecting nature.
“The spaces for picnics are true examples of what landscape integration on regional roads should be. It is a leisure area which has environmental concerns, representing what has always happened since 1980 when the panoramic roads were built in the Azores, mainly on S. Miguel,” mentioned the Secretary.
For the Regional Secretary for Infrastructures, the Government’s commitment to embellish the areas adjacent to the regional roads is vital, adding that “we already have new spaces for picnics spread throughout the Archipelago, because we have always praised the continuation of the landscape integration policy, which is a good lesson for those who support the ecology in theory.”
The Barreiro scenic overlook and the space for picnics, located in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, has a parking lot for 28 cars, 8 grills, 6 straw awnings with a capacity of 33 seats. This space represented an investment of 75 thousand Euros.
The Regional Secretary has announced the construction of similar spaces in Espigão (Municipality of Nordeste), in the area of Charquinho da Covoada, in Achadinha and in the village of Mosteiros.
