Preserving the religious heritage is also preserving one of the most important aspects of the Azorean identity. This was the motto that inspired the signing of a cooperation agreement, which took place on Corvo Island this morning, between the Regional Secretariat for Science, Technology and Infrastructures and the Churchwarden Commission of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres Church.
The protocol envisages an investment of 35 thousand Euros for the replacement works of the roof of the Corvo Mother Church.
José Contente, the Regional Secretariat for Science, Technology and Infrastructures, said that “it is an always useful partnership in terms of our cultural and material heritage, of the best that is done in the Azores. We will maintain this partnership methodology in which there is an effort from the churchwarden commissions and from the Regional Government.”
The church, visited by the Secretary, will have its roof replaced to avoid any seepage after the completion of the other restoration works, a contract work that was equally financed by the Azorean Government, thus preserving one of the most important landmarks of the local heritage.
In small communities, such as Vila do Corvo, institutions of this nature play a crucial role in the everyday life of the islanders, the reason by which the Azorean Government, through the SRCTE, is concerned about the maintenance of these public buildings that congregate and serve the local community.
José Contente underlined that this is a major concern at a Regional level. Several protocols for the renewal and maintenance of the headquarters of various social institutions, including the restoration of many churches in the Archipelago, have been signed.
