Ponta Delgada ,  April 30, 2012

Azoreans are good example in the defence of common good, says José Contente

The Regional Secretary for Science, Technology and Infrastructures participated on behalf of the President of the Government in the Solemn Rite of Dedication of Nossa Senhora da Luz Church that took place on Graciosa on Sunday.

The church has undergone renewal works at the level of infrastructures and equipments as well as some repair works in its interiors; these interventions were financially supported by the Regional Government.

On the occasion, José Contente praised the efforts undertaken by the village of Luz, adding that "these partnerships bring good results because here, as elsewhere in the Region, the Azoreans are a good example when it comes to projects that aim to protect common good."

"This is why we have been resisting and persisting on nine islands for over 500 years; we have overcome natural disasters and difficulties with our belief in Christian values," said the Regional Secretary.

The Azorean religious heritage has been supported by the Government over recent years as evidenced by the repair and constructions works of the churches damaged by the 1998 earthquake.

The Government has also supported small and major repair works of churches, parish houses and social centres, which also reflects the Government's "concern with cultural and religious heritage" in the context of preservations and recognition of our Azorean identity," stressed the government official.
