Ponta Delgada ,  June 28, 2016

14 million-Euro return of SATA Rallye Açores 2015 "clearly demonstrates" the event’s impact in the Region, says Vítor Fraga

The Regional Secretariat for Tourism and Transport stressed in Ponta Delgada the huge importance to the Region of an event such as SATA Rallye Açores, now designated as Azores Airlines Rallye.

Vítor Fraga spoke at the presentation of the study on the economic impact of the 50th edition of the event held last year, stressing that the rally "fully complies" with the goals set.

"The overall economic impact was of 14.4 million Euros, of which 10.1 million Euros correspond to direct expense while the remaining 4.3 million Euros represent media value. With regard to Eurosport coverage, it is important to emphasise that we are talking about more than seven million viewers, which demonstrates the scale and impact of this competition in a Region such as ours," said Vítor Fraga.

On the other hand, the government official stressed that "the consolidation of events, as we have been reinforcing over time, is essential to maximise return."

"While in 2013 the overall return was 11.1 million Euros, last year the return was 3.3 million higher, i.e., 14.4 million Euros that correspond to a growth in return of about 30%. This represents "an increase of one million Euros to the regional economy and 2.3 million Euros from media value."

Hence, the Government of the Azores continues to believe that the "growing visibility of the Azores destination will certainly involve the organisation of major events such as this one in the Region. They bring thousands of people and unprecedented media exposure to our archipelago at international level," said the Secretary for Tourism.

For the Regional Secretary, the visibility the Azores destination has been achieving with the organisation of major international events in the archipelago has "enhanced the multiplier effect of demand in terms of tourism growth."

In this regard, the government official stressed the organisation of the events: Azores Airlines Rallye, Azores Ultra Trail Run, Red Bull Cliff Diving, Canyoning International Meeting in the Azores, Formula Windsurfing World Championship, Azores Airlines Pro Surf, VISSLA World Surfing Championship and Azores MTB World Marathon, among many others. According to him, they "contribute to the external projection of the products that make the tourist identity of the Region. In this regard, the promotion of the Azores in external markets as an active and adventure tourist destination that privileges the contact with nature has registered a significant increase."

Vítor Fraga also stated ATA Rallye Açores "contributed to make 2015 the best year ever in the Azores tourism."

"We have overcome the barrier of 1.5 million overnight stays, which represents an increase of about 44% in the period between 2012 and 2015, taking into consideration all types of accommodation," added the government official.

According to the Regional Secretary for Tourism and Transport, the strategy to consider events as "fundamental elements in a strategy for promoting and increasing tourism flows "meant that in the period between 2012 and 2015, regarded as a historic period at national and regional level, the growth rate of overnight stays in traditional hotel units was percentage points higher than the national growth rate." The strategy designed for the tourism sector also included the repositioning of the destination and the investment in priority markets, including the USA and Canada, as well as the promotion of direct communication with potential tourists and the implementation of the new model of accessibility to the Region.

"The results and the studies carried out in the tourism sector, such as this one presented today, confirm that the Azorean Government's investment in the organisation of event in the Region as way to reach the projection level we desire is an increasingly justified decision to meet the challenges the future imposes on us," said Vítor Fraga.
