Regional Government ensures supply to Corvo Island by air

Due to worsening sea conditions, which prevent the vessel “Lusitânia” from leaving the port this week to supply Corvo Island, the Regional Government has decided to move forward with the supply of essential goods to this island by air, through the Regional Cohesion Fund, using the cargo space of SATA Air Açores.

By Friday, April 3, a total of 1,500 kilos of various products will be transported, including food, fresh produce, fruits, vegetables and flour.

The Regional Secretariat for Transport and Public Works, through the Regional Cohesion Fund, has been in permanent contact with local entrepreneurs, especially those who guarantee the supply of essential goods to the population, taking into consideration the emergency situation in the Region, which has been extended until April 30. Accordingly, the supply operations to be carried out this week respond to the needs of these entrepreneurs.

In the last supply by sea, carried out in March, the vessel “Lusitânia” made four calls and the vessel “Paulo da Gama” made one call at Casa Port, carrying about 700 tonnes of food, fuel, vehicles, building materials, animal feed, frozen food and other miscellaneous goods for Corvo Island.

In turn, the vessel “Malena” was at Lajes das Flores Port last week, carrying several containers, to ensure the regular supply to the island of Flores.

The Regional Cohesion Fund is attentive to the specific needs of the population, together with entrepreneurs from the two Western Group islands. It will continue to monitor the evolution of sea conditions in order to jointly coordinate with the company Empresa Barcos do Pico the next maritime supply operation, while ensuring in the meantime the air transport of goods by SATA Air Açores.
