Regional Director highlights Regional Government's investment in information technologies

The Regional Director for Public Works and Communications stated in Ponta Delgada that the Regional Government has invested in the area of information technologies, which has succeeded in attracting companies in this field.

Frederico Sousa spoke to journalists on the sidelines of the opening session of "Building Portugal Together," held at the Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory (LREC), stressing the importance of the Regional Government's involvement in this event.

"This is the first edition that there is a decentralisation of the largest national information technology event, which travels from Lisbon for the first time to seven regions across the country," stressed the Regional Director.

“We thought it made perfect sense for the Regional Government, in partnership with the private and business sector, to join this initiative,” added the government official.

Frederico Sousa considered that the Regional Government's involvement in this initiative demonstrates what is done in the Azores in the field of information technologies, but it is also an opportunity “to gain knowledge from the specialists who will take part in this national initiative.”

The Regional Director recalled that the Regional Government was a pioneer in the area of technologies when creating a document management system and has been undertaking efforts to attract digital companies, such as the case of the two technological parks, Nonagon on São Miguel Island and Terinov on Terceira Island.

"The Terceira Tech Island project is itself an example of what the Government has been doing in this field," Frederico Sousa highlighted, pointing out that Azorean companies "do not lag behind national companies."

The Regional Director stated that this event, more than a matter of information systems and software, is a matter of procedures.

"It is a digital transformation that will use a set of good practices, seizing the potential that technologies can bring," said the government official.

In this context, Frederico Sousa pointed out the digitisation of procedures, mentioning that the way it can be used not only involves the technological part but also a procedural and mental transformation, taking into account “the responsible and wise use of the Internet."

"It is not enough to have a tool to access new technologies, we also have to know how to use them effectively and efficiently," said the Regional Director.
