Senior Volunteer Programme kicks off on São Miguel Island in January, announces Andreia Cardoso

The Regional Secretary for Social Solidarity announced today in Ponta Delgada that the Senior Volunteering Programme, aimed at adults aged 55 and over, will being in January on the island of S. Miguel.

 Andreia Cardoso spoke at the opening session of the 1st Regional Volunteering Forum. On the occasion, she stressed that this new programme intends to "foster the participation of older people in the community, social and cultural life after retirement." 

 This programme will include various projects promoted by public and private entities in sports, culture, education, nature and social areas, in addition to providing for initial and specific training.

 The Secretary for Social Solidarity stated that the first training group of senior volunteers will begin on the island of São Miguel in the week of January 20-24. The initiative will be later extended to other islands of the archipelago. 

 "The Regional Senior Volunteer Bank will enable the qualification of volunteers and promote active ageing," said the government official. 

 Andreia Cardoso said this measure, provided for in the Action Plan of the Regional Strategy to Combat Poverty and Social Exclusion for the 2018-2019 biennium, falls within the development of strategies by the Regional Government to promote active ageing.

 The Regional Secretary stressed that the volunteering does not "only make a difference in the lives of others, but also in the lives of volunteers themselves," highlighting the benefits for the physical and mental health of those who volunteer at any age.

"The are many benefits, such as the development of social skills, the reference and example they become for others, especially for younger generations, the promotion of self-esteem, and increased well-being and self-achievement. Moreover, the fight against social isolation helps to reduce stress and anxiety," stressed Andreia Cardoso. 

 The government official highlighted the role of volunteers and the importance of this task. She also announcing the creation of a specific Volunteer Trophy for the Autonomous Region of the Azores, similar to what already happens at national level, with the aim of "valuing these good practices."
