"Renovated Home, Inhabited Home" programme responds to new challenges Azorean families are facing, reveals Andreia Cardoso

The Regional Secretary for Social Solidarity stated today that the "Renovated Home, Inhabited Home" programme gathers a series of proposals that took into account "the new challenges that families are facing due to the impact of the current social and economic context on the rental market and on the life of Azorean citizens."

Speaking in Ponta Delgada, Andreia Cardoso added that the Government's proposal provides for two types of support: "Renovate for Leasing" and "Renovate for Living." It is intended to become an alternative to the current decree establishing support for the recovery of degraded housing.

The "Renovate for Leasing" measure ensures the granting of financial support for renovation of vacant properties with conditions to be put on the rental market.

This measure will support the intervention budget at a 100% rate and takes the form of an interest-free reimbursable subsidy.

"This support will be provided through the financing for the rehabilitation and recovery of vacant properties when owners do not have the financial capacities to do so," said Andreia Cardoso. According to her, "the recovered property will be used by the Region for long-term lease, i.e., during the period necessary for the full reimbursement of the support granted by the Region for rehabilitation purposes."

In turn, the "Renovate for Living" measure consists of financial support for the rehabilitation of residential properties, taking the form of refundable and non-refundable subsidy. It is directed to families whose social and economic situation prevents them from carrying out the necessary interventions for their recovery.

According to Andreia Cardoso, "this measure also ensures a 100% support rate; however, families with better economic conditions will have to reimburse the Region for part of the amount allocated."

"This reimbursement will be made in monthly instalments to be calculated taking into account housing expenses already incurred by the household. It will correspond up to a maximum of 30% of the overall intervention budget," added the government official.

For the Regional Secretary, this is another "Government's strategy to efficiently respond to the housing needs of Azoreans. The initiative intends to provide access to decent, adequate and affordable housing, while promoting the rehabilitation of degraded housing and the redevelopment of the urban environment."

The "Renovated Home, Inhabited Home" programme will provide a response to families facing serious housing shortage as well as to guarantee access to housing for those who have no response through the rental market.

Moreover, this programme will also turn rehabilitation into a form of intervention in terms of property and urban development, while promoting social and territorial inclusion and housing opportunities.

In the previous term, the Regional Government supported about four thousand families in the area of housing, which represented an investment of nearly 50 million Euros.

In the current term, almost 3,500 families have already been supported, an investment of more than 27 million Euros.
